78% admitted they are worried about making the right choice of career. Makaela of Nurture Digital Marketing aims to make a difference to lower this statistic with engaging Marketing Workshops.
Imagine I walk into a bright boardroom to deliver my Marketing Workshop to 17-19-year-olds. Observing, the room I look around at my audience to find students often with a mix of curious and puzzled facial expressions and shrugged body language.
I then begin to take the room and engage my students, who start to sit up with interest. And once I begin to interact and even by the end of my Workshop, puzzled faces have become confident smiles and, shrugged body language are transformed into poised seating positions. By the end, students have learnt the power of their personal brand.
This lead me to share this article with you because I have been working closely to nurture SMEs and students because a large number of young people from school age to undergraduate, often do not know what areas they want to pursue and lack awareness of the importance of their personal brand.
Did you know that 70% of secondary school students do not know or are unsure about what they want to do for a career when they leave school?
Likewise, a further 78% of students admitted they are worried about making the right choice of career. According to an article published by the Institute of Government & Public Policy (IGPP).
The report includes research from 1,000 secondary school students, 1,000 parents and 500 teachers around the UK.
This report shows that a large number of students in the UK need advice, which is personalised to their key subjects, interests, personality, talents or natural abilities.
We can understand it is likely that not all Secondary students may not know which career path they want to pursue in the future, however having quality real-life advice from professionals who are already in careers can assist to lower this percentage of 70%.
Also, nearly half (48%) of students want to see which careers would suit their interests and personality, as suggested by the report published on IGPP.
Advice from professionals such as myself with careers in Marketing, Finance, Media or Medicine is crucial to support students to be able to make better and more informed decisions on their career paths.
Students in Secondary Schools, Colleges or even Universities may not know exactly which careers they want to pursue. However, providing them with valuable information to consider will better support their decisions and influence their aspirations.
My solution is to share my experience of my career journey, and the creation of Nurture Digital Marketing with students to support them to make decisions that are more informed.
Similarly, 92% of parents have discussed potential career options with their child, however, a third (33%) do not feel equipped to give career advice.
This year, teaching, educating and sharing my knowledge of the Marketing industry has been a real focus of mine, as I showcase my business Nurture Digital Marketing to students who are in schools, colleges or universities.
So far this year I have delivered interactive workshops to many students and founders on topics such as Marketing, Personal Branding and explored further with a Q&A on starting a business.
My sessions have provided lots of food for thought especially as another report suggests 44% of undergraduates are unable to define the industry that they would like to work in once they graduate.
After my recent workshop teaching session, my key takeaways are:
Students have questions, and after being in the marketing industry for nearly 15 years, I am equipped to answer these questions students have thoroughly. The most popular question asked by Sixth Form Students after a recent workshop I delivered was “What do I think of both apprenticeships in comparison to internships”. Also, students asked me “What do I look for when hiring, and can I give advice on this”.
Young people are keen to learn about new or different career pathways. When asked to share his feedback from the workshop one 18-year-old stated that my workshop helped him immensely to consider a new career pathway. His new way of thinking about his career options was planted during one of the workshop tasks; I had created for the students to do. Having been pleased to hear I helped to plant these bright new ideas, I nurtured them by showing ways of how he could enter those industries.
Talking to a nurturing professional can shape a young person's future My aim through Nurture Digital Marketing is to nurture and share the minds is not only a part of my CSR but also a passion. Marketing has so many parts and delivering workshops which demonstrate the different types of Marketing and functions can be very beneficial in aiming to lower the earlier statistic of “70% of secondary school students do not know or are unsure about what they want to do for a career when they leave school”.
